Legal Guardianships
In the event that an individual is no longer capable of making important decisions for themselves, such as when an aging parent is diagnosed with Alzheimer's or a loved one is incapacitated by stroke or brain injury, we can assist you in becoming appointed guardian of your loved one. As their legal guardian, you can see to it that they are well-cared for and make important decisions regarding every aspect of their life and their property.
The main reason for a guardianship is to expedite needed medical care, but there are also other reasons. A guardian of the person is responsible for his ward's health and personal care. A guardian of the estate manages his ward's assets and is accountable to the Court in so doing. A single individual often serves in both capacities and, in certain cases, alternatives other than a formal guardianship might be available for the incapacitated person's benefit. These alternatives might include Powers of Attorney and/or Management Trusts created by the Probate Court.
Whether you are seeking to obtain legal guardianship of a special needs child who has just turned 18, an elderly parent or another family member or friend who can no longer care for themselves, we can explain your options clearly and assist you in finding the best solution for your family's needs.
